MCC Group to Expand Polysilicon Production Capacity

In the context of the suspension of the approval of new nuclear power plant projects in China, China Metallurgical Group said it will expand the production capacity of polysilicon to promote the development of new energy sources in China's solar photovoltaic industry.

Zhang Zhaolong, Vice President of China Metallurgical Group, made the above statement at the 2010 Annual Results Presentation.

Zhang Zhaolong stated that because MCC possesses advanced technology in polysilicon, and China's polysilicon production is not sufficient to meet domestic demand, it indicates that China's polysilicon industry does not have excess capacity, coupled with the current national support for new energy, “China Metallurgical has Plans to expand polysilicon production capacity and plans to reach a capacity of 10,000 tons in 2011."

China's solar photovoltaic industry has been heavily importing polysilicon raw materials from abroad, and it is regarded as an important symbol of China's solar photovoltaic industry, which is large but not strong.

In 2010, China's polysilicon production capacity was 85,000 tons, actual production was 45,000 tons, and imports were 47,500 tons, accounting for slightly more than 50% of total demand.

However, due to high energy consumption, polysilicon production has been repeatedly regulated by the Chinese government. Zhang Zhaolong believes that although the production of 1 ton of polysilicon requires more than 100,000 tons of electricity, the use of polysilicon after the use of energy efficiency is relatively high, so "polysilicon is not two high industries."

In 2010, the annual polysilicon production of 4,117 tons of polysilicon, an increase of 87.7%.
