· Officially implemented C-NCAP new version of new car evaluation procedures on July 1

On July 1, the 2012 version of C-NCAP was officially implemented. This is the third version of the latest upgrade following the launch of China's first new car evaluation program in 2006 and the second edition in 2009.

“Compared with the previous two versions, the new standard test items have increased, the speed has increased, and the scores have been more stringent.” Liu Yuguang, deputy chief engineer of the National Car Quality Supervision and Inspection Center and C-NCAP Test Evaluation Department, said that the main part of the new C-NCAP Change can be simply summarized as "211", that is, "two increases, one change, one improvement".

Among the "two increases" of the new rules, one is the addition of the "whipping test", that is, the low-speed post-collision neck protection test, which is to examine the protection of the passenger's head in the case of rear-end collision. This experiment originated from the European E-NCAP rule, and the pulley was launched with a specific acceleration waveform of 15.65km/h to simulate the collision process. The dummy is placed on the seat to measure the damage level of the neck during the collision, and to evaluate the protection effect of the vehicle seat headrest on the passenger's neck.

The second is to increase the inspection of the Electronic Stability Control Security System (ESC). The ESC system, ESP, which includes ABS (anti-lock brake system) and ASR (anti-skid system), is an extension of the functions of these two systems. As the most advanced form of current automotive anti-skid devices, ESC plays an important role in car safety protection. Unlike the EU countries, the installation of new car ESC systems in China is not a mandatory requirement, so the configuration rate is relatively low, especially for the small and medium-sized passenger cars with the largest sales volume. Therefore, an increase in the inspection of ESC equipment will help promote the use of new vehicle safety facilities.

“One transformation” means that the damage value of the rear passengers is changed from qualitative evaluation to quantitative evaluation in each test, which highlights the advantages of C-NCAP in the evaluation of rear passenger protection ability. In fact, in other countries' evaluation systems, there has been no investigation of the collision safety of rear passengers. However, compared with foreign countries, the Chinese consumers have a very high utilization rate of the rear row of the car. Therefore, it is necessary to incorporate the safety considerations of the rear passengers into the evaluation system. In this project, the C-NCAP rules set a precedent in the NCAP system of the world, forming the unique characteristics of the C-NCAP standard.

“One improvement” is to increase the speed of the front 40% offset crash test from 56 km to 64 km, which is in line with international standards. This increase in speed has significantly increased the difficulty of the entire evaluation standard, and put forward higher requirements for the body structure design, material selection and processing, and increased the gold content of the evaluation standard. On the one hand, the level of road construction is constantly improving, and the speed of collisions is increased, which is more in line with the daily driving level of vehicles in modern society. It also makes the results of collision tests more valuable. On the other hand, the evaluation standards are in line with international standards, which also makes domestic autonomy. Brands can better “go out” without having to design different designs for domestic and foreign markets, saving manufacturers' costs.

Due to the addition of inspection projects, the total score of the new C-NCAP evaluation system has increased from 51 points to 62 points, but it is not easy to get the new points. Experts said that the evaluation of the new version of C-NCAP has increased by 15% to 20% compared to the old version. In other words, 20% of the five-star vehicles in the current evaluation will be reduced to four stars.
