3D ROBOTICS & Autodesk FORGE New Frontier
Leading drone manufacturer 3D Robotics is leveraging Autodesk’s Forge Platform to create an innovative UAV-to-cloud solution tailored for enterprise professionals in the construction, telecommunications, surveying, mapping, energy, and infrastructure sectors. This collaboration aims to revolutionize how field teams capture and analyze site data.
As one of the early adopters of the Forge platform, 3DR benefits from a powerful set of cloud-based services, APIs, and SDKs that enable developers to build robust applications and experiences. The platform empowers companies like 3DR to streamline workflows and enhance productivity across industries.
“Current site data collection methods are expensive, time-consuming, and often risky,†said Chris Anderson, CEO of 3D Robotics. “Drones can access areas that are difficult or dangerous for people, allowing for more accurate measurements and better management of our environments. We’re thrilled to use Autodesk Forge to deliver a comprehensive solution that helps our customers save time, reduce costs, and keep workers safe.â€
The integration of Autodesk’s ReCap Photo Web API plays a key role in 3DR’s new solution. This technology allows field professionals to conduct inspections, surveys, and scans using drones, significantly improving efficiency and safety. For instance, in telecom tower inspections, the SOLO drone can collect data and send it to the cloud for processing via ReCap, eliminating the need for personnel to climb dangerous structures.
Once processed through the ReCap engine, the data—such as 3D point clouds, 2D orthographic views, and 3D meshes—is made available on A360. From there, users can download and integrate the data into various Autodesk software tools, supporting tasks like site monitoring, stockpile measurement, and as-built documentation.
George Hatch, a senior technical specialist at Autodesk, highlights how seamlessly data from the Site Scan app can be incorporated into Autodesk workflows. This integration simplifies the process of turning raw drone data into actionable insights.
Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President of Products at Autodesk, added, “We're excited to work with 3D Robotics to help field professionals gather critical information and make informed decisions across multiple industries. Through the integration of Site Scan and Forge, 3D Robotics is enabling new ways of working for our AEC customers.â€
