Lab Short Path Distillation Glass Equipment

Short path evaporators are available in laboratory to production scale, with sizes ranging from 0.04 to 80 m² and can operate at temperatures up to 400°C.

Short path distillation is a specialized thin film distillation technology that allows for even lower working pressures and consequently lower boiling points.

Unlike traditional wiped film evaporators, the condenser in short path evaporators is located inside the unit itself. This design helps reduce the distance vapors must travel, which contributes to lower operating pressures and more efficient distillation.

Operation

The feed liquid is introduced into the still under high vacuum, where it spreads into a very thin film and is rapidly moved down the evaporation surface. Heated walls and the high vacuum environment cause the more volatile components (distillate) to move to the external condenser, while the less volatile components (residue) continue down the cylinder. The separated fractions then exit through individual discharge outlets. Depending on the application, either the distillate or residue may be the desired product. Small amounts of condensable low molecular weight compounds collect in a cold trap upstream of the vacuum system. For high solvent loads, an optional external condenser can be installed downstream of the still.

Very low operating pressures, up to 0.1 Pa (100 Pa = 1 mbar). The shorter vapor path in short path evaporators allows for these extremely low pressures.
These low pressures ensure minimal distillation temperatures, making the process ideal for heat-sensitive materials.
Short residence time minimizes thermal stress and decomposition of the product due to the quick evaporation and immediate cooling of the concentrate.
High evaporation rates make this equipment highly efficient for various applications.
