The Tuoketuo Power Plant project is a key development initiative in the central and western regions of the country, playing a vital role in driving economic growth. The second phase of the power plant features two units with a combined installed capacity of 1.2 million kilowatts. These units are long-circulating pumps, which began operations in 2003 to support power generation. However, during the trial operation and after the handover, the pump units experienced significant vibration and some mechanical damage. In response, both the long-circulating pump team and the designers conducted on-site investigations and worked closely with all relevant parties to analyze the issue. They also referred to vibration data and spectral analysis from the North China Electric Power Institute. After eliminating other potential causes, it was determined that the high rotational speed of the pump—425 revolutions per minute—was leading to system resonance, which caused the vibration problems. To ensure safe and stable operation, based on many years of experience, we proposed a solution that did not require increasing the outlet reaction force but instead reduced the motor speed to 370 rpm. This approach allowed us to retain the existing pump base and outer cylinder body, as well as reuse molds that had already been successfully used in other projects. Only some rotor components needed to be replaced, significantly reducing the retrofit timeline. Additionally, the number of motor poles was adjusted from 14 to 16, while maintaining the same motor power. The motor was also modified to handle axial thrust and its maximum load accordingly. This transformation was not only cost-effective but also quick and efficient. Since the completion of the retrofit, the unit has been operating smoothly, with all vibration measurements meeting national standards. The client expressed high satisfaction with the results. This marks another successful case of a circulating pump retrofit project by our company. Currently, the success of the Tuoketuo Power Plant retrofit is widely recognized within the power industry. The retrofit plan has become a standard reference for similar projects in other power plants. This achievement highlights the technical strength and innovation capabilities of our long-circulating pump technology.
