Decrypt the long-core pump core competitiveness
Since 2004, Hunan Electric Changsha Pump Co., Ltd. (referred to as "Long Pump") has been a significant player in the pump industry, consistently striving for excellence and growth. Recently, the company achieved a major milestone with the successful development of the C720 large-scale condensate pump. This breakthrough positioned Long Pump as the third major manufacturer in China capable of producing such large pumps, following Shen Pump and Shanghai KSB. With cutting-edge technology and innovation, Long Pump now stands among the top pump manufacturers in the country. It was also recently recognized by state authorities as one of the leading companies in nuclear power pump manufacturing. The company's large circulating pumps hold more than 70% of the domestic market share, demonstrating its strong presence and influence.
**From Stagnation to Acceleration**
As a long-standing state-owned enterprise, Long Pump once enjoyed great success and was famously known as "South Pump, North Pump." In the mid-1990s, its output value surpassed 200 million yuan, but it remained stagnant around that figure for nearly a decade. Wang Zhenhua, a 55-year-old workshop director who has worked at the company for 36 years, recalls that for over 50 years, the plant’s output value hovered near 200 million yuan for almost 10 years.
In 2000, Changsha Pump took a bold step by initiating the first pilot project of shareholding system reform in Changsha. It implemented "two substitutions" — changing property rights and employee status. However, this move did not resolve the deep-rooted issues of the state-owned enterprise, and instead led to unprecedented losses. Faced with challenges, the question loomed: where could Long Pump go?
**Reform and New Opportunities**
Determined to turn things around, the company sought strategic investors. As a key supplier to Xiangtan Electric Co., Ltd., Long Pump contributed significantly to its parent company’s annual output value. After three years of negotiations, a reorganization was finalized: Hunan Electric acquired nearly 90% of Long Pump, transforming it into Hunan Electric Changsha Pump Co., Ltd.
This change brought new energy and opportunities. Under the leadership of General Manager Li Jiping, the company adopted a clear vision: prioritizing development, valuing employee well-being, emphasizing science and technology, and employing qualified personnel. Through strict management and innovative strategies, production and operations saw remarkable improvements. In just one year, the company achieved an output value of over 300 million yuan, with nearly 390 million yuan in payments and over 600 million yuan in orders. This marked a historic high for the company, breaking decades of stagnation.
**Import and Innovation Go Hand-in-Hand**
As one of China’s top five pump manufacturers, Long Pump has built a solid foundation over more than 50 years of development. Yet, the company is not content with past achievements. It continues to look globally, seeking partnerships with leading international pump manufacturers.
Through collaboration with companies like Ingersoll Rand, Ebara, Hitachi, and others, Long Pump has introduced advanced technologies and integrated them with independent innovation. For example, the vertical condensate pump, developed from U.S. Ingersoll-Rand technology, was successfully applied to China’s first 600,000 kW thermal power unit. Today, these pumps are widely used in power plants, urban water systems, metallurgy, and more, with over 1,000 units produced and exported to Europe, the U.S., Southeast Asia, and beyond.
The newly developed C720 condensate pump has received widespread acclaim. According to Li Pujiang, deputy chief engineer, this pump is one of the key components in a 600,000 kW thermal power unit. Only a few domestic companies can produce it. The C720 model, based on Japanese Hitachi technology, represents a major leap in performance. Its efficiency is 4.6% higher than similar domestic models, saving up to 26 million yuan in electricity costs annually. This level of performance has impressed both domestic and international experts.
Currently, the C720 has already secured 16 orders worldwide within a month. Li Jiping emphasizes that continuous technological innovation is the lifeblood of the company. Long Pump is committed to exploring the frontiers of science and technology, combining foreign advancements with internal R&D to drive sustainable growth.
**Entering the Nuclear Power Field**
In addition to thermal power, Long Pump is making strides in the nuclear power sector. The company is working to secure a foothold in the market for supercritical and ultra-supercritical thermal power pumps, desulfurization pumps, and most importantly, nuclear pumps.
Recently, Long Pump signed a contract for nuclear pumps with Pakistan’s Qia Mama C2 nuclear power project. This was their first nuclear project, marking a significant step into the nuclear power field. Industry analysts believe that with the national push for supercritical and nuclear power projects, the demand for nuclear pumps will surge. By 2020, the total installed capacity of nuclear power is expected to exceed 40 million kilowatts, creating vast business opportunities.
Long Pump aims to lead in the development of nuclear main pumps through technology absorption, innovation, and research. The company plans to invest heavily in new facilities and equipment during the “11th Five-Year Plan†period, aiming to produce 6–8 nuclear main pumps annually. By then, Long Pump’s annual sales are expected to surpass 1.2 billion yuan, reaching 2 billion yuan in the future.
