Eaton and Beiqi Foton Guangzhou FAW launch hybrid commercial vehicle
Eaton, a global leader in industrial technology, has officially introduced its first hybrid powertrain for commercial vehicles in China this month. This innovative system, developed in collaboration with Beiqi Foton, will be integrated into 30 buses operated by Guangzhou FAW Bus. The launch marks a significant step forward in the adoption of clean energy solutions in China’s public transportation sector.
Eaton is not only a top supplier of diesel-electric hybrid systems for trucks and buses in the U.S., but it also offers advanced hydraulic hybrid technology for garbage trucks, delivery vehicles, and other commercial equipment. The company has long been at the forefront of developing energy-efficient and environmentally friendly powertrain solutions.
The official handover of the 30 hybrid buses took place on January 11 during a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the U.S. Department of Commerce. This event was part of a broader U.S. clean energy trade delegation visit to China. These buses are expected to reduce fuel consumption by 27% and cut particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions by the same amount, contributing significantly to cleaner urban air quality.
James W. McGill, President of Eaton’s Asia Pacific region, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “We’re proud to bring our hybrid technology to Beiqi Foton and support Guangzhou FAW Bus in meeting their sustainability goals. Our innovations help improve fuel efficiency and reduce environmental impact, and we look forward to expanding our presence in the Chinese market.â€
Kevin Beaty, manager of Eaton’s hybrid power system division, added, “This delivery represents a major milestone for Eaton. As cities across China strive to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, we’re excited to play a key role in this transition. It’s a rare opportunity to align business growth with environmental responsibility.â€
With a population of over 12 million, Guangzhou relies heavily on public transport, and Guangzhou FAW Bus operates nearly half of the city’s public transit fleet. Beiqi Foton, one of China’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers, has been working closely with Eaton since 2006, testing hybrid systems in prototype vehicles. Zhang Weixiong, Chairman of Guangzhou FAW Bus, said, “We’re thrilled to collaborate with Beiqi Foton and Eaton to bring hybrid technology to Guangzhou. We plan to expand the use of these systems in our fleet, leveraging clean and reliable energy sources.â€
Beiqi Foton President Wang Jinyu emphasized the company’s commitment to reducing emissions and promoting sustainable development. “In addition to our partnerships with Eaton and Guangzhou FAW Bus, we aim to deepen our efforts in hybrid technology. We hope to inspire broader industry participation in building a greener future.â€
David Bohigian, Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, highlighted the potential of American clean energy technologies to support both China and India in meeting growing energy demands while protecting the environment. He praised the collaboration between Eaton and its Chinese partners as a model for international cooperation.
Eaton continues to lead in hybrid powertrain innovation, offering both electric and hydraulic hybrid systems for commercial vehicles. These technologies combine multiple energy sources to recover and store renewable energy, improving fuel efficiency and lowering emissions. Major clients include FedEx, UPS, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and European truck manufacturers like DAF and Daimler.
Looking ahead, Eaton plans to introduce a new hydraulic start assist system (HLA) in 2008, designed for garbage trucks. The company also collaborates with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop hybrid systems that can boost fuel economy by up to 70% in delivery vehicles.
As a diversified industrial manufacturer with $12.4 billion in sales in 2006, Eaton operates in key sectors such as power quality, fluid power, and intelligent truck drives. With 63,000 employees and a global presence in over 140 countries, Eaton remains committed to driving sustainable growth through technological innovation.
