The pollution situation in China's coastal waters remains severe
In January 2007, the State Oceanic Administration released the "China Marine Environment Quality Bulletin," revealing that marine pollution in China's coastal areas remained a serious issue. Throughout the year, 82 red tide events were recorded, covering an area of approximately 11,610 square kilometers. These incidents were predominantly concentrated in the East China Sea, highlighting ongoing environmental concerns.
The bulletin noted a slight improvement in offshore water quality, but overall pollution levels remained high. Most offshore areas were still considered clean, with good water quality conditions. However, around 145,000 square kilometers of sea areas failed to meet clean water standards—an improvement compared to 2006, when the non-compliant area was about 0.4 million square kilometers larger. Severely polluted zones were mainly found in Liaodong Bay, Bohai Bay, Huanghekou, Laizhou Bay, the Yangtze River estuary, Hangzhou Bay, the Pearl River estuary, and coastal waters near major cities. The primary pollutants included inorganic nitrogen, active phosphates, and oil. The Bohai Sea continued to suffer from severe pollution, with about 24,000 square kilometers—nearly 31% of its total area—failing to meet water quality standards.
Li Xiaoming, head of the Marine Environmental Protection Division at the State Oceanic Administration, emphasized that local marine authorities had increased monitoring of land-based discharge outlets. Among the 573 monitored sea outlets, approximately 87.6% discharged pollutants exceeding legal limits. The main contaminants were chemical oxygen demand, phosphate, suspended solids, and ammonia nitrogen. Guangxi, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces had the highest rates of non-compliant sewage outlets nationwide, underscoring regional challenges in managing marine pollution.
These findings reflect the complex environmental challenges facing China’s coastal regions and highlight the need for continued efforts in pollution control and marine conservation.
