A number of non-governmental environmental protection organizations investigated the bad record of "Apple"

A number of non-governmental environmental protection organizations found in the survey that “Apple” parts supply companies in China have serious occupational hazards and bad records of environmental pollution. Non-governmental organizations urged “Apple” to assume environmental responsibility and establish a supplier supervision mechanism. However, “Apple” company blindly evaded it, becoming the worst performer of 29 well-known Chinese and foreign IT brands surveyed.

"Apple" ignores NGO doubts

The attitude of “Apple” to the questioning of environmental organizations is far behind the friendly and enthusiastic face of “Apple” fans.

The last time the environmental protection organization sent an e-mail to the "Apple" company's supplier responsibility manager, it was on July 22 this year. The letter fell into the sea and faced the question of environmental organizations' pollution of the "Apple" production chain with heavy metals, and "Apple" responded. The measure is: Ignore it.

From April to August this year, 34 environmental protection organizations, including Friends of Nature, the Public Environmental Research Center, and Dahl asked to publish three reports on “The Survey of Heavy Metal Pollution in IT Brand Supply Chains”. The survey targets 29 well-known IT companies at home and abroad. Brand. The head of the Public Environment Research Center told reporters that "Apple" has repeatedly avoided the serious pollution and occupational hazards of its suppliers, and it has become the worst performer of all surveyed brands.

Ma was first known for his research on the protection of water resources in China and became a well-known environmentalist. He was selected as one of the "100 most influential people in the world in 2006" by the American Times magazine. Since 2006, he has created two databases, the “China Water Pollution Map” and the “China Air Pollution Map.” These two databases have recorded more than 30,000 corporate environmental violations in all parts of China. The data comes from China’s environmental protection, Information published by the departments of water conservancy and oceanography. The two databases publicize the information released by the government and expect the public to participate in the supervision of polluting enterprises.

By sorting out these data, Ma found that some companies had excessive emissions of heavy metals, including many manufacturers in the IT industry chain. "The number of such companies is huge. With the strength of our environmental protection organization, it is impossible to go to the one-on-one supervision. Moreover, these outsourced processing companies do not care so much about their reputation." For IT brand companies, the core value is the brand, any Negative information will hurt the image of the brand in the minds of consumers. They will care more about the public's response than the OEM's. “And each brand has a large number of OEM companies, such as Panasonic has more than 4,000 suppliers and Siemens has 10,000 suppliers.”

Therefore, a "forced" approach was created: environmental organizations pressure the well-known IT brands, require IT brands to supervise the pollution problems of their own companies in the industry chain, and urge enterprises to carry out rectification.

In April of this year, the environmental protection organization sent an e-mail to the relevant person in charge of “Apple,” which pointed out that three companies that have violated heavy metal pollution may be related to “Apple” and hope that “Apple” will confirm it. In addition, the "Apple" leader and 28 other corporate leaders received the same questions:

● Are the above companies their suppliers?

● If there is a company supplier in it, does the company know about their environmental violation records?

● If you understand something, have you taken any measures? If you do not understand the situation, what actions are you prepared to take after seeing the circumstances outlined in this letter?

● Does the company have other suppliers with environmental violations?

● Does the company have a standard for suppliers' environmental performance? Has a supplier environmental management system been established?

After the first e-mail was sent, companies and environmental protection organizations were contacted one after another, but "Apple" remained silent until July 15. Ma told reporters, "Apple" finally break the silence of reasons, it may not request from the Chinese environmental organizations, but the pressure exerted by a US environmental organization. The Pacific Environment in the United States has been concerned about the “Research on Heavy Metal Pollution in IT Brand Supply Chains” and has forwarded the English version of this report on its website. After learning that some companies did not respond to the Chinese environmental protection organization's question, the agency sent a letter to companies including Apple to request a response.

The "Apple" Supplier Responsibility Manager replied to PacificEnvironment's email. "On May 26, 2010, the "Apple" Supplier Responsibility Manager replied that "Apple" (U.S.) 1) did not receive a letter from the Chinese environmental protection organization regarding the supplier's environmental violation caused by "Apple"; 2) No Confirmation also cannot deny whether the non-compliance organization mentioned by the environmental protection organization is an “Apple” supplier; 3) “Apple” will investigate the illegal company mentioned by the environmental protection organization, but will not inform any details or time schedule.”

After this, the U.S. environmental protection organization repeatedly asked "Apple" to respond to the requirements of the Chinese environmental protection organization. In June, it called on U.S. consumers to write a letter to "Apple" to make this request. In early July, hundreds of consumers After the email was sent, "Apple" still did not reply.

On July 15, 2010, the Chinese environmental protection organization finally received an email from the "Apple" company's supplier responsibility manager. It responded to the environmental protection organization's IT supply chain issues for the first time and denied the three issues mentioned by the environmental protection organization. Vendor related. This is also the only direct response of the "Apple" company so far. Ma believes that the "Apple" company's reply is too simple. On July 22, the environmental protection organization sent a letter again and put forward a more specific case of violation suppliers, but it did not receive any response afterwards.

True green or fake green

In the past impression of the public, overseas companies often pay more attention to social responsibility and pay more attention to the brand's environmental image. However, environmental protection organizations found that the situation was not entirely in the investigation of heavy metal pollution in the IT brand supply chain. Brands like “Apple” that have a healthy and vanguard image in the market have become the brands that are most resistant to environmental pollution.

From the beginning of the investigation, the environmental protection organization discovered that the "Apple" sought by the public is "hard to find." Ma said that they are looking for links between polluting companies and IT brands, all through open information. “For example, some companies would claim to be the processors of certain brand parts on their own company website. This is a glory for them.” “Apple” is a company that is highly dependent on foundries, and China is the most An important OEM base, but it is extremely difficult to find out which companies are "Apple" foundries. "'Apple' takes a highly confidential measure on its industry chain. 'Apple's policy is not to comment. If someone makes comments, it says that it will do its own investigation and then announce how many proportions have problems, But don't tell people who they are, what they did, and the language is unknown. This is how it is handled."

In the public "2009 Progress Report on Supplier Social Responsibility", "Apple" exposed itself to 83 of its suppliers, 45 of which did not pay proper overtime expenses, and another 23 paid wage standards were lower than China's minimum wage level. However, there are no specific names of companies in this report, and only a large number of reports can make it clear that Foxconn Group is one of the most important foundries of “Apple”. Relying on the “climbing and clues”, the environmental protection organizations proposed that the three companies identify themselves with “Apple,” but they are faced with a cold encounter. Their performance has even lagged far behind the original local brands with limited social expectations.

In an e-mail sent by the environmental protection organization to “Apple” on July 22nd, the environmental protection organization focused on a company named Jianlian (China) Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Jianjian Technology”). In a number of media reports, Jensen Technology has established a number of well-known IT brands, including Apple, and the company's record of environmental pollution and occupational injuries has been tainted.

In 2009, Joint Construction Technology was subject to administrative penalties from the Suzhou Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau. Because “the failure to take corresponding measures resulted in the loss of hazardous waste without completing a single transfer of hazardous waste”, the joint construction of the technology was fined 80,000 yuan. In addition, since February 2010, CCTV’s “Focus Interviews”, “Daily Economic News”, “Economic Observer” and other media reported that it has illegally and illegally used toxic hexane as a solvent to chemically clean mobile phone screens. The prevention of occupational hazards and the protection of employees caused an employee poisoning accident. According to follow-up reports by Chinese and foreign media, a number of poisoned employees were identified as disabled after receiving hospital treatment for several months.

"The production process of the 'Apple' product has caused such serious damage. 'Apple''s company still chooses to remain silent and avoid. It is out of coldness or arrogance." Ma questioned.

Ma believes that the "IT Brand Supply Chain Heavy Metal Pollution Survey" has no malicious intentions. Its purpose is not to crack down on a brand or reveal a brand. In the three reports that have been released, some brands initially expressed negative attitude toward environmental protection organizations, but after the communication, they expressed that they would attach importance to the management of the industry chain, while BT, Siemens, Hewlett-Packard, Sony and others began to establish their own supplier environment. Performance verification system. For these brand attitude changes, the report has been gradually reflected.

"Green Choice" is not a trend

Today, the "Apple" LOGO that has been bitten has already turned into a "totem." In July of this year, the first Shanghai “Apple” store opened in Lujiazui, and some people set up tents outside the “Apple” store two days in advance. This scene is not surprising for the "Apple" boss Steve Jobs, "Apple" to create a kingdom through innovative products, followers around the world are willing to pay homage.

Consumers are willing to spend a lot of money buying an “Apple” product. There may be various reasons, but Ma believes that such reports as the “IT Brand Supply Chain Heavy Metal Pollution Survey” aim to make consumers buy an IT product. When it comes to products, we can add a “green” reason and use our own choices to urge IT brands to fulfill their environmental responsibilities.

The world's leading IT brands, most of them no longer conduct their own production, but to focus on product development and marketing, outsource production to the industrial chain of thousands of businesses. It may seem that they are "green", but when the production is handed over to more extensively managed small businesses, their environmental impact may not diminish.

However, companies in the IT industry chain clearly lack the incentive to comply with environmental regulations. Ma believes that in countries with strict law enforcement, the power comes from strict legal supervision, and if it violates environmental regulations, companies will be severely punished. However, in the current situation where China’s law enforcement is often ineffective, a large number of companies would rather pay fines than control pollution. Under such circumstances, if the IT brand only asks for price regardless of environmental performance in procurement, it will indirectly encourage suppliers to lower environmental standards to win orders. "IT brands are the rule makers, if it reaches the environmental requirements to be part of the procurement standard, most vendors will have the will to strengthen pollution control input costs."

Ma gave a positive example. Retail giant Wal-Mart, after conducting several rounds of exchanges with the Public Environmental Research Center, believes that using the “China Water Pollution Map” database can help them improve the efficiency of supply chain environmental management. In October 2008, the company promised in Beijing that any company that did not meet China's environmental standards would not be able to become a supplier to Wal-Mart. The company then used monthly water pollution maps to search for its suppliers. The problem is to urge companies to carry out rectification and explain to the public. The "Green Choice" initiative hopes that consumers will pay attention to the environmental impact of buying goods, but this concept has not yet formed a climate. Ma believes that every time "Apple" releases new products, so many media reports, but for its environmental performance in the industry chain, reports are rarely seen, this will only make IT brands believe that Chinese consumers do not Concerned about environmental issues, they also have no pressure to manage their environmental problems in the industry chain.

"In many developed countries, even a single IT product affects health or the environment

In this survey, the performance of local brands was not bad. On the contrary, Haier and other brands communicated with the environmental protection organization earlier. However, Ma also sees that compared with international brands, local brands are still lacking in professional competence in responding to questions from environmental protection organizations, and there are no specific agencies and personnel to follow up. Especially IT companies, in many places they are star enterprise, unlike chemical companies often face public questioning, the establishment of green supply chain is not on their agenda. "International brands have a lot of experience in this area because they may face challenges from all aspects of the world every day."

In March 2007, 21 domestic and international environmental protection organizations, including the Public Environmental Research Center, were all chased by the media. In China, besides caring for the safety of the final product, we must also be concerned about the environmental pollution in the production process. Because we are the world's factory, pollution will remain in our own land, and it is our own national who will ultimately suffer harm. In 2009, there were heavy metal pollution incidents in many provinces and cities in China, and it was not uncommon for IT industry to have excessive discharge of heavy metal pollutants. Land contaminated with heavy metals polluted 12 million tons of food every year. Living in a place known as the world's factory. Chinese consumers should use consumer behavior to cast a green vote for their living environment.
