The Northwest Herald reported on the resignation of a lieutenant from the Marengo Fire Department, revealing a financial misconduct case involving the volunteer fire department's nonprofit organization. According to multiple sources, Lt. Russ Kahl stepped down on Tuesday after being found taking $6,700 from the Marengo Fire Rescue Association. Kahl had served as the association’s president for nearly two years and was involved in three separate incidents this month where he misused funds. The current president, Scott Klaassens, who was recently appointed, confirmed the details of the incident. Kahl returned the money earlier this week before resigning. Although the association informed local police about the matter, no criminal charges have been filed so far. “As a board, we decided that at this time, he shouldn’t be charged,†Klaassens stated. “This is still an open case, pending the results of our audit.†The suspension of Kahl occurred a week prior, following concerns raised by the association’s treasurer, Klaassens, who noticed several unapproved withdrawals. The association has internal controls in place to prevent such actions. Moving forward, the group plans to conduct a full audit to ensure no other funds were misappropriated. Additionally, the board will review and strengthen its financial policies, according to Klaassens. The stolen funds came from private donations within the association, not from public money or the fire department itself. Fire officials clarified that the nonprofit operates independently and uses donations to purchase equipment and supplies not covered by state funding for volunteer firefighters. Marengo Police Chief Joseph Hallman mentioned that the department was notified last week but could not proceed with an investigation without a formal complaint. “No one filed charges. No official complaint was made,†Hallman said. “We would investigate if something came to our attention, but it didn’t reach us.†This incident highlights the importance of transparency and accountability within volunteer organizations, especially those relying on community support. As the audit continues, the Marengo Fire Rescue Association aims to rebuild trust and ensure better financial oversight moving forward.
