Hanover Park wants to absorb fire district within village borders

The *Daily Herald* recently reported that Hanover Park officials are exploring the possibility of consolidating fire service areas by negotiating with the neighboring Bloomingdale Fire Protection District. The goal is to bring a largely industrial region — along with its associated tax revenue — under Hanover Park’s fire jurisdiction. Both parties are currently assessing potential boundaries and evaluating how this change might affect their respective budgets. Hanover Park Fire Chief Craig Haigh emphasized that the process is still in its early stages and that the village has no intention of pursuing legal action. “You can’t just take tax dollars from another taxing body without considering how they’ve relied on that revenue for their operations,” he said. While the exact financial impact remains unclear, both sides are considering a phased transition to avoid a sudden loss of income for Bloomingdale. Haigh also noted that the move would not lead to any changes in staffing or equipment for either department. Meanwhile, Bloomingdale Fire Chief Jeff Janus stressed that public safety remains the top priority in the discussions. This isn’t the first time Hanover Park has looked into consolidating fire services. In 2000, the village established its own fire department after taking over the defunct Hanover Park Fire Protection District. Since then, officials have worked to disconnect land within the village’s boundaries from other fire districts. The areas under consideration include two key intersections: Gary Avenue and Lake Street, as well as County Farm and Schick roads. These lands have long been part of Hanover Park, but they are currently served by both Hanover Park and Bloomingdale fire departments, which use different radio frequencies and often conduct overlapping inspections. Chief Haigh believes the consolidation would improve efficiency, particularly by eliminating the "dual inspection process." In 2011, Hanover Park took over building inspections from the community development department, and now its inspectors check businesses for code compliance and review permit applications. However, properties in the disputed areas are inspected by both agencies, leading to duplication of efforts. Despite a record number of emergency calls — expected to reach nearly 4,000 this year — fire losses have significantly decreased, which Haigh attributes to recent reorganization efforts. Officials hope to finalize the agreement by fall, before both entities set their property tax levies for the upcoming year.
