Marengo FD lieutenant resigns after returning stolen money

The Northwest Herald recently reported on the resignation of a lieutenant from the Marengo Fire Department. According to multiple sources, Lt. Russ Kahl stepped down Tuesday after being discovered taking $6,700 from the nonprofit Marengo Fire Rescue Association. Kahl, who had served as the association’s president for nearly two years, was involved in three separate instances of misappropriating funds this month. The current president, Scott Klaassens, who took over the role just days ago, confirmed the details. Kahl has since returned the money and resigned, but the matter is still under investigation. “We made the decision not to press charges at this time,” Klaassens said. “This isn’t a closed case yet. We’re still conducting an audit to see what else may have happened.” The issue came to light when the association’s treasurer, Klaassens, noticed several unauthorized withdrawals. The organization has internal policies in place to prevent such incidents, but it appears they were bypassed. In response, the board has decided to perform a full financial audit and review its procedures to prevent future issues. Kahl was suspended from the fire department a week prior to his resignation. He had access to the association’s finances due to his position as president. While no public funds were involved, the money taken came from private donations intended for the volunteer firefighters. “The association uses donations to purchase supplies that aren’t covered by state funding,” said a fire official. “This wasn’t a public fund, but it’s still a serious breach of trust.” Marengo Police Chief Joseph Hallman stated that the department was notified last week but couldn’t take action without a formal complaint. “We can’t investigate unless someone files a report,” he said. “The fire department handled this internally.” As the situation unfolds, the community remains concerned about the integrity of the nonprofit and its leadership. The board has pledged to be transparent and ensure that such an incident doesn’t happen again. Thanks, Dan.
