MABAS Division 24 news

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

A groundbreaking initiative has taken shape in the south suburbs of Chicago as a group of fire departments recently launched the region’s first firefighter candidate testing center. This move marks a significant step toward bringing local hiring procedures into alignment with national standards, making the process more efficient and fair for aspiring firefighters.

The MABAS 24 coalition, which includes 20 fire departments across southern Cook County, partnered with the National Testing Network—a trusted pre-employment testing service—to open the new facility at Division 24 headquarters in Homewood. The center will now serve as a one-stop location for candidates to take the nationally recognized Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), eliminating the need to travel long distances or even across state lines.

This new testing center not only offers convenience but also aims to bring consistency to the hiring process. Before its establishment, each department had its own physical ability test, leading to inconsistencies and, in some cases, legal challenges. For instance, the city of Chicago faced lawsuits over claims that its tests were biased or discriminatory.

The CPAT, which is now available locally, is widely regarded as a legally sound and non-discriminatory assessment. It is endorsed by both the International Association of Fire Fighters and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. The test consists of eight physically demanding tasks, such as dragging a hose, raising a ladder, and performing a search and rescue maneuver, all of which must be completed within 10 minutes and 20 seconds.

For those interested in becoming firefighters, the CPAT can be registered for online at the Homewood location for $125. The fee includes a training packet and access to orientation sessions where candidates can get hands-on experience with the test stations. Additionally, two timed practice runs are available for $39 each, allowing participants to prepare effectively.

The CPAT is valid for one year and is designed for entry-level candidates seeking to enter the firefighting profession. Because it's standardized and recognized nationwide, a successful result allows candidates to apply to multiple departments across the country without retaking the same test. This makes the process more accessible and less burdensome for those looking to work in different states.

Initially, the Homewood facility will host two testing sessions per month, with plans to increase to three times a week if demand grows. In addition to firefighter testing, the center will also offer computer-based assessments for law enforcement officers, corrections officers, and emergency communications professionals.

Revenue generated from the testing center will help MABAS 24 repay the $70,000 investment made to acquire the specialized equipment needed for the program. This initiative represents not just a shift in how firefighters are evaluated, but also a commitment to fairness, efficiency, and regional cooperation in public safety.
