MABAS Division 24 news

Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:

A groundbreaking development has taken place in the south suburban fire departments, as a coalition of 20 fire agencies in southern Cook County recently launched the region’s first firefighter candidate testing center. This initiative marks a significant move toward aligning local hiring procedures with national standards and improving efficiency for aspiring firefighters.

The MABAS 24 group, which represents these departments, partnered with the National Testing Network, a leading pre-employment testing service, to establish the facility at Division 24 headquarters in Homewood. This new center is designed to streamline the process for those looking to join the fire service.

Previously, many candidates had to travel long distances—sometimes even across state lines—to take the nationally recognized Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), which is required by numerous fire departments. Now, they can take the test locally, saving time, money, and effort.

Beyond convenience, MABAS officials believe the testing center will help bring more consistency to the hiring process in the area. Historically, different departments created their own physical ability tests or outsourced them, leading to inconsistencies and, in some cases, legal challenges. For example, the City of Chicago faced lawsuits over its test being perceived as discriminatory.

The CPAT, now available at the new facility, is widely accepted as a fair and legally sound assessment. It's endorsed by both the International Association of Fire Fighters and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. The test consists of eight physically demanding tasks, such as dragging a hose, raising a ladder, and performing a search and rescue, all within a strict time limit of 10 minutes and 20 seconds.

Candidates interested in becoming firefighters can sign up online to take the CPAT at the Homewood location for $125. The fee includes a training packet with practice exercises and access to orientation sessions where they can get hands-on experience with the test stations. Additionally, two timed practice runs are available for $39 each.

Once passed, the CPAT is valid for one year and serves as a gateway for entry-level firefighters. Its standardized format makes it transferable across the country, allowing certified candidates to apply to multiple departments without retaking the test, even if they're out of state.

The Homewood facility plans to offer two testing sessions per month initially, with the potential to increase to three times a week based on demand. In addition to firefighter testing, the center will also support computer-based assessments for law enforcement officers, corrections officers, and emergency communications professionals.

All revenue generated from the testing center will be used to repay the $70,000 investment made by MABAS 24 to acquire the specialized equipment needed for the program. This initiative not only benefits local candidates but also strengthens regional cooperation in public safety.
