Eaton and Beiqi Foton Guangzhou FAW launch hybrid commercial vehicle
Eaton, a global leader in industrial products, has officially introduced its first hybrid powertrain for commercial vehicles in China this month. This innovative system is being deployed on 30 buses operated by Guangzhou FAW Bus, following a partnership with Beiqi Foton. The initiative marks a significant step forward in the adoption of clean energy solutions in China’s transportation sector.
Eaton is already a top supplier of diesel-electric hybrid systems for trucks and buses in the U.S., and it also holds advanced hydraulic hybrid technology for garbage trucks, courier vehicles, and public transport. These technologies are designed to improve fuel efficiency while reducing emissions, making them ideal for urban environments facing air quality challenges.
The launch was highlighted during a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the U.S. Department of Commerce, where 30 hybrid buses were handed over to Guangzhou FAW Bus. This event was part of a broader U.S. clean energy trade delegation visit to China. According to Eaton, these buses are expected to cut fuel consumption by 27% and reduce particulate and nitrogen oxide emissions by similar amounts, contributing significantly to cleaner urban air.
James W. McGill, President of Eaton’s Asia Pacific region, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration: “We are proud to support Beiqi Foton and Guangzhou FAW Bus in meeting their sustainability goals. Eaton's hybrid technology not only enhances fuel economy but also plays a key role in environmental protection.â€
Kevin Beaty, manager of Eaton’s hybrid power systems division, added that the delivery of these 30 buses represents a major milestone. “This project paves the way for greater adoption of hybrid technology in China, where cities are increasingly focused on reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions,†he said.
Guangzhou, home to 12 million people, relies heavily on public transport, with nearly half of its fleet managed by Guangzhou FAW Bus. Beiqi Foton, one of China’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers, has been working closely with Eaton since 2006, testing hybrid systems in prototype vehicles. Zhang Weixiong, Chairman of Guangzhou FAW Bus, praised the collaboration, saying, “We are excited to bring hybrid technology to our city and expand its use in our fleet.â€
Wang Jinyu, President of Beiqi Foton, emphasized the company’s commitment to environmental policies. “We are actively promoting hybrid technology in public transport and plan to deepen our efforts in this area. We hope to inspire more industries to work together for a greener future.â€
David Bohigian, Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, noted that American clean energy companies like Eaton have the potential to support both China and India in meeting their growing energy needs while protecting the environment.
Eaton’s hybrid systems are widely recognized in the industry. The company offers both electric and hydraulic hybrid technologies, which combine different energy sources to recover and store renewable energy, improving efficiency and lowering emissions. Major clients include FedEx, UPS, Coca-Cola, and DAF Trucks. In 2008, Eaton planned to introduce a new hydraulic start assist system (HLA) for garbage trucks, expanding its reach into new applications.
With annual sales of $12.4 billion in 2006, Eaton operates in multiple sectors, including power quality, fluid power, intelligent truck drives, and automotive components. The company employs over 63,000 people and operates in more than 140 countries worldwide.
Eaton’s continued innovation in hybrid technology reflects its commitment to sustainable development and helping customers meet evolving environmental standards.
