The rise of the central Jiujiang shipbuilding "Starlight"

Jiujiang, located in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in Jiangxi Province, plays a crucial role in regional development. By revitalizing the Jiujiang River, the city can effectively counter the influence of Wuhan and the expansion of the Yangtze River Delta. This strategic position enhances Jiangxi’s competitiveness and strengthens its role as a key hub along the Beijing-Kowloon railway. The National "Eleventh Five-Year" Port Development Plan has recognized Jiujiang Port as one of China's key water transport ports for expansion and opening. This unique geographical advantage has brought significant business opportunities to the shipbuilding industry in Jiujiang. A major milestone in this development is the planned 10 billion yuan shipbuilding base. At the end of last year, China Aviation Technology Import and Export Corporation (AVIC) visited Jiujiang to inspect the shipbuilding sector and discussed joint efforts to establish a large-scale ship export base. A preliminary agreement was reached, signaling the arrival of a major investment in the region. AVIC, one of China's largest import and export trading companies, has been involved in ship trade since 1996. It has long-term partnerships with top domestic shipyards, including Shanghai Jiangnan Shipbuilding, Guangzhou Shipyard International, and others. AVIC's decision to invest in Jiujiang reflects confidence in the region's potential. Experts believe that if AVIC successfully establishes its base in Jiujiang, it will significantly boost the scale and quality of shipbuilding in the province. It will also help solve issues related to export ship guarantees, foreign exchange earnings, and overall investment attraction. Li Xianshu, director of the Jiujiang Municipal Defense Science and Technology Office, emphasized the city’s existing shipbuilding infrastructure and its 152-kilometer Yangtze River coastline. Through strategic planning and resource integration, Jiujiang aims to become a key small and medium-sized shipbuilding base in the river basin, fostering industrial growth and achieving leapfrog development. Currently, AVIC is working with local authorities to first establish a ship export trading company in Jiangxi, focusing on export agency services. Further steps include setting up a large-scale ship export base in the future. Private capital has also played a significant role in Jiujiang’s shipbuilding boom. Zhejiang-based investors have entered the market, acquiring or building several shipyards. Companies like Yinxing and Xiangsheng have become major players, producing large-tonnage vessels. Meanwhile, Tsinghua Tongfang Group, known for its IT industry, has also entered the sector by acquiring a shipyard in Hukou County. Local private enterprises, such as Jiangzhou United Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., have also expanded their operations, showing strong growth and increasing production capacity. However, challenges remain, especially regarding export financing and competition from neighboring cities like Chongqing and Wuhan. To stay competitive, Jiujiang's shipbuilders are focusing on niche markets, producing high-value ships that larger yards may not prioritize. Companies like Jiangxin and Jiangzhou are developing specialized vessels with strong market appeal. Looking ahead, Jiujiang aims to expand its shipbuilding capacity, improve efficiency, and build a comprehensive support system for exports. With continued investment and strategic planning, the city is well-positioned to become a major player in China’s shipbuilding industry.
