3D ROBOTICS & Autodesk FORGE New Frontier
Leading drone manufacturer 3D Robotics is leveraging Autodesk’s Forge Platform to create an innovative UAV-to-cloud solution tailored for enterprise professionals in construction, telecommunications, surveying, mapping, energy, and infrastructure sectors. This collaboration aims to streamline field operations by enabling remote data collection and analysis.
As one of the early adopters of the Forge platform, 3DR benefits from a powerful ecosystem of cloud services, APIs, and SDKs that empower developers to build advanced tools and applications. The Forge Platform serves as a foundation for creating smarter, more efficient workflows in the future of design and manufacturing.
“Collecting site data today is often expensive, time-consuming, and even dangerous,†said Chris Anderson, CEO of 3D Robotics. “Drones can safely access areas that are difficult or risky for humans, allowing for more accurate measurements and better management of real-world environments. We’re thrilled to use the Autodesk Forge platform to deliver a comprehensive site capture solution that helps our customers save time, reduce costs, and keep people out of harm’s way.â€
The integration of Autodesk’s ReCap Photo Web API into 3DR’s workflow enables field professionals to conduct inspections, surveys, and scans using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) efficiently and effectively. For example, in telecom tower inspections—where climbing tall structures can be both risky and inefficient—3DR’s SOLO drone captures high-quality data, which is then processed in the cloud via Autodesk ReCap. This eliminates the need for personnel to climb towers, significantly improving safety and productivity.
Once processed through the ReCap engine, the reality data—including 3D point clouds, 2D orthographic views, and 3D meshes—is made available on A360. From there, it can be downloaded and used within Autodesk software for various applications such as site monitoring, stockpile measurement, as-built documentation, and more.
George Hatch, Senior Technical Specialist at Autodesk, highlights how seamlessly data from the Site Scan app can be integrated into Autodesk workflows. “This integration simplifies the process of moving from field data to actionable insights,†he says.
Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President of Products at Autodesk, added, “We're excited to partner with 3D Robotics to help field service professionals gather critical information and make informed decisions across multiple industries. Through the integration of Site Scan and Autodesk cloud services, 3D Robotics is redefining how our architecture, engineering, and construction customers work.â€
