Using the Elios 3 to improve site safety on a mine in Australia

Enhancing Site Safety with the Elios 3 in an Australian Mine

A culvert on an open-pit mine in Australia had long been considered inaccessible—until the Elios 3 was deployed to scan it in under a day.

Key Benefits at a Glance

Access

The Elios 3 provided access to previously unreachable areas of the site, ensuring personnel safety while gathering critical data.

Speed

The drone’s quick deployment allowed the team to complete the inspection in just one day and deliver results to the client efficiently.

Flexibility

When unexpected challenges arose inside the culvert, the team adapted quickly using the Elios 3 to find a solution without delays.

Accuracy

The Elios 3 captured detailed data used for a full visual inspection, allowing engineers to assess the structural integrity of the culvert accurately.

Introduction: Drone Surveys in Mining

Mining operations around the world must maintain strict safety standards to protect workers, whether they're working in open pits or underground. Regular inspections and maintenance are crucial for equipment and infrastructure. Culverts in mines serve as conduits for water and can also provide structural support. If they fail, it could lead to serious issues like subsidence or landslides. Therefore, regular maintenance is essential.

Culverts are often difficult to inspect because they are underground and may have limited access points. Traditional methods can be risky and time-consuming. That's why many inspectors are turning to drones like the Elios 3, which offer a safer and more efficient way to gather data. The Elios 3 can navigate through tight spaces, even in the presence of stagnant water, making it ideal for such tasks.

Customer Needs: Inspecting Culverts with the Elios 3

Azure Integrity, an industrial drone service provider based in Adelaide, Australia, has been using the Elios 3 this year after previously using the Elios 2. They've applied the drone across multiple sites, including mining and railway infrastructure, to inspect key assets.

Recently, Azure Integrity visited a large open-pit mine in Queensland to conduct a culvert inspection. This was the first time the mine had used drones for such a task, as the owners wanted to improve safety following recent incidents that highlighted the importance of proper maintenance.

The culvert in question was 80 meters long, 3.5 meters high, and 1.5 meters wide. Due to an energy breaker on the upstream side, the space at one end was too small for a person wearing breathing gear, and the water level made it impossible to use floating inspection tools. The Elios 3 proved to be the perfect solution for this challenging environment.

This project served as a proof of concept for Azure Integrity, demonstrating the value of their services. The goal was to perform a visual inspection of the culvert using the Elios 3’s cameras.

Solution: Adapting Drone Workflows with the Elios 3

Upon arrival, the Azure Integrity team quickly deployed the Elios 3 and began the inspection. They moved smoothly through the stagnant water inside the culvert without any issues.

However, about 50 meters into the inspection, they encountered an unexpected challenge: a family of bats. Despite the pilot’s efforts to guide them out, the bats refused to leave. Thanks to the Elios 3’s flexibility, the team decided to return at night when the bats would be active and the culvert would be empty. The drone’s powerful lighting system—16,000 lumens—allowed clear visibility even in low-light conditions, enabling the inspection to continue from 50 meters to the final 30 meters of the 80-meter culvert.

The inspection was completed using Flyability’s Inspector 4 software. An engineer then reviewed the footage to evaluate the culvert’s condition and plan any necessary maintenance.

Conclusion: The Success of Drone Services in Mining

Azure Integrity delivered excellent results for their client, thanks to the Elios 3’s mobility and adaptability. This experience highlights one of the many advantages of using indoor drones in mining: rapid deployment, easy adjustments, and reduced downtime.

In this Queensland mine, the team accessed a new area safely, protecting workers and improving overall site safety. The client was pleased with the outcome, and the bats returned undisturbed to their home after the inspection.

This successful workflow demonstrates the effectiveness of drone-based inspections in mining. It also showcases the quality of work performed by Azure Integrity’s pilots. Moving forward, they will continue to help mine operators enhance safety, save time, and meet specific operational needs.

Pulverizer Machine

Pulverizers are machines that pulverize large solid materials to the required size.

According to the size of the crushed material or the crushed material, the mill can be divided into coarse crusher, medium crusher, fine mill and superfine mill. There are four kinds of external forces applied to the solid in the grinding process: pressing, cutting, impact and grinding. Press rolling is mainly used in coarse and medium crushing, suitable for the crushing of hard materials and bulk materials. Shearing is mainly used in fine crushing, suitable for the crushing of ductile materials. Impact is mainly used in medium crushing, fine grinding, ultrafine grinding, suitable for crushing brittle materials. Grinding mainly in fine grinding, ultrafine grinding, suitable for small pieces and fine particles.

The crusher makes use of the high speed relative motion of the movable tooth plate and the fixed tooth plate, so that the crushed object can be crushed by the comprehensive action of tooth impact, friction and the impact between the materials. The crusher is suitable for crushing Chinese herbs, precious medicinal materials, ores and chemical raw materials in small batches in various varieties, alloys, metallurgy, geology, scientific research and other units.

The pulverizer machine has the advantages of simple structure, solid, stable operation and good crushing effect. The pulverized material can be discharged directly from the grinding chamber of the main machine. The particle size can be obtained by replacing the mesh screen with different aperture. The powder collecting chamber adopts the completely closed silencer structure, which can effectively reduce the working noise. In addition the machine is all stainless steel. The inner wall of the casing is machined to achieve smooth surface, which changes the phenomenon of rough inner wall and powder accumulation of the previous models, so that the production of drugs, food, chemical industry and so on is more in line with national standards and meet the requirements of GMP.
