Historic 5-11 Alarm fire with multiple LODD in Chicago, 2-7-68

This story comes from Steve Redick:

Another well-known and tragic incident occurred when a gasoline tanker leaked and caught fire in an alley at 801 W. 49th Place, at Mickelberry Food Products. The fire led to a massive explosion that killed four firefighters and several civilians. My father was part of Engine Company SS3 and responded to the call. He often shared with me how he waded through waist-deep water, covered in gasoline, while working in the basement to shut off utilities as instructed. He always said they were lucky no one was injured during the operation, and that they shouldn’t have been down there in the first place. This happened after the explosion, as they arrived later in the fire. You can listen to the audio recording here.
