Historic 5-11 Alarm fire with multiple LODD in Chicago, 2-7-68

This is from Steve Redick:

Another well-known and tragic incident. A gasoline tanker leaked and caught fire in an alley at 801 W. 49th Place, at Mickelberry Food Products, which led to a massive explosion that killed four firefighters and several civilians. My dad was part of SS3 and responded to the call. He often shared with me the harrowing experience of wading through waist-deep water, covered in gasoline in the basement, while shutting off utilities as instructed. He always said they were lucky no one was injured during the operation, and that they shouldn't have even been down there in the first place. This was after the explosion had already occurred, and they arrived later in the fire. The audio recording of this event can be heard here.
