Historic fire: Goldblatt’s fire in Mt Prospect, 1977 (pt2)
On a bitterly cold Sunday in February 1977, Larry Shapiro captured powerful images of the 4th Alarm Goldblatt’s fire in Mount Prospect. These photos showcase the efforts of firefighters and their equipment during one of the coldest days of the year.
The American LaFrance Aero Chief Snorkel was deployed at the scene, ready to tackle the blaze with its long reach. This image highlights the unit's presence as it worked alongside other emergency vehicles.
Another shot shows the Glenbrook Fire Protection District (FPD) Pierce Snorkel positioned at the rear of the Goldblatt’s store. The unit had recently changed its name from Glenview Rural FPD, and this photo captures that transition.
A close-up reveals how a canvas tarp was used to shield parts of the snorkel from the intense water spray, which quickly froze due to the extreme cold. It's a small but telling detail about the conditions on that day.
In another image, the Glenbrook Snorkel is seen alongside two Mount Prospect engines, both painted in their original yellow and white colors. This gives a glimpse into the firefighting equipment of the time.
Multiple shots of the Mount Prospect Snorkel working at the fire emphasize the critical role these units played in such emergencies. Each photograph tells a story of dedication, resilience, and the challenges faced by first responders in harsh winter conditions.
These images not only document a historical event but also serve as a tribute to the bravery of those who fought the fire and the technology that supported them.
