After over 8 years of practical application and promotion in Wujin District, Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, the number of rice transplanters has reached 1,314, with mechanized rice planting exceeding 80% and mechanical harvesting surpassing 90%. This transformation has allowed local farmers to bid farewell to the traditional practice of hand-planting rice, which had been a backbreaking task for thousands of years. Wujin has become the first county-level district in China to achieve full mechanization in rice production. In his own field, Zhou Linfa, a villager from Yin Village in Buzhen Town, pointed to his walk-behind rice transplanter and told a reporter, "With this machine, transplanting rice is so convenient—no bending, no back pain. It takes less than half an hour to finish one mu of land across multiple fields. The old methods used by our ancestors should be completely abandoned." Cao Xingnan, director of the Agricultural Machinery Bureau in Wujin District, shared some numbers: using machines for transplanting saves time and effort while increasing yield by 5% to 10% per acre compared to manual planting. Farmers can earn over 150 yuan per mu more through mechanized planting. For operators, the cost to plant one mu is around 90 yuan. After deducting breeding and labor costs, the net profit per mu is about 40 yuan. If a transplanter works on 200 acres, it can earn up to 8,000 yuan in one season. Shen Ruiqing, member of the Standing Committee of the Changzhou Municipal Party Committee and secretary of the Wujin District Party Committee, emphasized that the win-win situation between farmers and machine operators is the key to the success of mechanized rice planting in the area. This year, there are 248 large-scale service companies providing mechanized transplanting services, accelerating the industrialization process. With the implementation of the “National High-quality Rice Production Mechanization Service Center” project and the completion of mechanized breeding centers in Furong and Zhaiqiao, the marketization and industrialization of rice planting services are progressing rapidly. Xu Shunnian, director of the Jiangsu Provincial Agricultural Machinery Bureau, noted that all levels of government and agricultural departments have reached a consensus on promoting rice transplanting technology, achieving a balance of speed, quality, and efficiency. So far, the province has added 9,513 new transplanters, bringing the total to 23,000. It is estimated that the area planted using machines this year will exceed 4 million mu. Jiangsu’s rice transplanters are also leading the way, developing toward serialization, diversification, and generalization, with Toyo as a key player. Cheng Fang, chairman of Jiangsu Dongyang Machinery Co., Ltd., said that the company will continue its commitment to supporting farmers and improving their livelihoods. Over the next 3–5 years, the company aims to produce and sell 50,000 rice transplanters and 2,000 harvesters annually, increasing the localization rate from 60% to 80%. This will make Dongyang a core player in China's agricultural machinery industry. Professor Bai Pu from China Agricultural University, after visiting the rice transplanter site, stated that with the major breakthroughs in wheat mechanization, the focus now is on rice production. Jiangsu has taken the lead in overcoming technical challenges in seedling cultivation and mechanized transplanting, providing equipment support and high-quality agricultural services. Wujin District has achieved a rice mechanization level of over 80%, with transplanting and harvesting rates exceeding 90%. It is well-deserved to call Wujin the first county (district) in China to achieve full mechanization in rice production.
