Jiangsu Wujin takes the lead in realizing mechanization of rice production in China
After more than eight years of practice and promotion in Wujin District, Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, the district has achieved remarkable progress in rice mechanization. The number of rice transplanters has reached 1,314, with the mechanized planting rate exceeding 80% and the mechanized harvesting rate surpassing 90%. This transformation has enabled local farmers to leave behind the traditional method of hand-planting, which involved long hours of backbreaking labor under the sun. For thousands of years, this practice was a common way of life, but now it's history. Wujin has become the first county (district) in China to fully mechanize its rice production.
In his own field, Zhou Linfa, a villager from Yin Village in Buzhen Town, pointed to a walk-behind rice transplanter and told a reporter, "With this 'iron guy,' transplanting rice is so much easier. No bending, no back pain. It takes less than half an hour to finish one mu of land across multiple fields. It seems like we can completely abandon the traditional methods our ancestors used."
Cao Xingnan, director of the Agricultural Machinery Bureau in Wujin District, explained that calculations show significant benefits. Using machines for transplanting saves time and effort, while also increasing yield by 5%-10% per acre compared to manual planting. Farmers can earn over 150 yuan per mu, and machine operators can make about 40 yuan per acre after deducting costs. If a single transplanter works on 200 acres, it can generate around 8,000 yuan in one season.
Shen Ruiqing, member of the Standing Committee of the Changzhou Municipal Committee and secretary of the Wujin District Party Committee, emphasized that the win-win situation between farmers and machine operators is key to the success of mechanized rice planting. This year, there are 248 large-scale agricultural service companies offering mechanized transplanting services. With the implementation of the "National High-quality Rice Production Mechanization Service Center" project and the completion of mechanized breeding centers in Furong and Zhaiqiao, the marketization and industrialization of rice planting services are accelerating rapidly.
According to Xu Shunnian, director of the Jiangsu Agricultural Machinery Bureau, government agencies and agricultural departments across the province have reached a consensus on promoting rice transplanting technology. The focus is on balancing speed, quality, and efficiency, entering a new phase of sustainable development. So far, the province has added 9,513 transplanting machines, bringing the total to 23,000. It is estimated that the area planted using machines will exceed 4 million mu this year. Jiangsu’s rice transplanters are leading the industry, developing toward serialization, diversification, and widespread use.
Cheng Fang, chairman of Jiangsu Dongyang Machinery Co., Ltd., said the company will continue to focus on supporting farmers, improving product innovation, and enhancing services. Over the next three to five years, the company aims to produce and sell 50,000 rice transplanters and 2,000 harvesters, raising the localization rate from 60% to 80%. This will solidify its position as a key player in China’s agricultural machinery industry.
Professor Bai Pu from China Agricultural University, after visiting a rice transplanter in action, noted that with the success of wheat mechanization, the push for rice mechanization is now the main focus. Jiangsu has taken the lead in overcoming technical challenges, selecting the right technological path, and providing equipment and high-quality agricultural services. Wujin District has achieved a rice mechanization level above 80%, with transplanting and harvesting rates exceeding 90%. It is well-deserved to call Wujin the first county in China to achieve full mechanization of rice production.
