China's heavy truck industry exports fell in the first half of the collective profit decline
In the first half of this year, preliminary data suggests that several major Chinese automotive companies, including China National Heavy Duty Truck (CNHTC) and Dongfeng Motor, faced challenges in their export performance. Some firms even reported a decline in overseas sales compared to previous years. This marks a sharp contrast to 2005, when these exports were a major source of profit.
Although comprehensive statistics are still pending, interviews with industry insiders reveal a noticeable drop in export volumes. For example, an executive from FAW Jiefang Automobile Co., Ltd. mentioned that while the company has long exported vehicles to Europe and Central Asia, this year’s results have been significantly weaker than the previous year.
CNHTC also shared similar concerns. Last year, the company exported 4,390 units and generated $127 million in foreign exchange. However, recent order numbers have shown a slight decline, signaling a more cautious outlook for the year.
Industry experts point to several factors behind the downturn. One key issue is the lack of centralized product distribution, which has led to inconsistent after-sales support. As a result, local consumers are less inclined to trust or purchase these vehicles, directly impacting export performance.
Dongfeng Motor has acknowledged these challenges and emphasized the need for improvement. The company’s overseas business division is pushing for higher technological value in its products, better internal management, and enhanced quality control and after-sales service to regain competitive edge in global markets.
Similarly, Shaanxi Automobile Group is focusing on increasing investment in independent research and development, as well as innovation in both sales and service strategies. The company remains committed to long-term growth and is not willing to compromise on its ambitious goals, even if it means accepting smaller profits in the short term.
With growing competition and shifting market dynamics, Chinese automakers are under pressure to adapt quickly and strengthen their presence in international markets.
