Construction of a new 25-meter long patrol boat at the Kooiman Shipyard in the Netherlands

Recently, the Kooiman Shipyard in the Netherlands has begun construction of a new 25-meter long patrol boat. The shipowner is the management of the Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and the new ship will be delivered in the summer of 2017.

When the ship was openly tendered, several shipyards participated in the competition, including design. The ship's design requirements incorporate multiple innovations to improve operational efficiency.

It is reported that the main focus of the tender is the overall life cycle cost of the vessel, and the minimum pollution emissions and minimum wave formation. Because the Port of Rotterdam is not only a densely populated waters, but the Port of Rotterdam also wants to set a good example for its customers: investing in energy efficiency from an economic and environmental perspective.

Kooiman Shipyard participated in the bidding. The shipyard awarded Van Oossanen a contract to provide the ship with a hull design. Van Oossanen has extensive experience in the yachting industry and has a proven track record of efficient hull, speed/captain ratio. The patrol boat design requires a maximum speed of 30 km/h and a cruising speed of 20 km/h. It combines Van Oossanen's two patented innovations: the Rapid Drainage Hull Form (FDHF) and the Vane? hull.

A good hull design can reduce hull resistance, which means less fuel is consumed and pollution emissions are reduced. The patrol boat needs to sail 350 days a year, and the Vane? hull RPA-8 can reduce 162 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, equivalent to planting more than 8,000 trees per year.

In addition, Kooiman Shipyard can also install small propulsion units, using 736 kW of power instead of 939 kW, which saves costs, reduces vibration and noise, reduces exhaust system installation, and provides more space in the mainframe.

Kooiman Shipyard expects this design to be a new benchmark for inland waterway and offshore patrols and survey vessels.
