2013 Cost of Car Ownership up 2 percent – AAA
Unfortunately, a recent AAA study reveals that the cost of owning and maintaining a new sedan in the U.S. is expected to rise by 2% in 2013—equivalent to an increase of 1.17 cents per mile. The primary driver behind this increase is maintenance costs, which have seen a significant jump.

Each year, AAA gathers real-world data to calculate the total 5-year (or 75,000-mile) cost of driving a new vehicle. This includes factors such as fuel expenses, repairs, insurance, taxes, license fees, depreciation, and financing charges, according to a report from Kickingtires.com.
John Nielsen, director of automotive engineering and repair at AAA, explained, “Several factors contribute to the overall cost of car ownership. This year, increases in maintenance, fuel, and insurance expenses led to a total cost of over 60.8 cents per mile.â€
Here’s a breakdown of the cost increases:
- **Maintenance costs rose by 11.26%**, covering labor, parts, and extended warranty expenses.
- **Insurance costs increased by 2.76%**, based on rates for a low-risk driver with a clean record. The study used data from five insurance companies across seven states, noting that actual rates can vary widely depending on location and individual driving history.
- **Fuel costs went up by 1.93%**, despite more fuel-efficient vehicles, due to rising gas prices.
To put this into perspective, it now costs approximately 60.8 cents per mile to operate a car, totaling around $9,122 annually. This is a stark contrast to the first study conducted in 1950, when the average cost was just 9 cents per mile.
As car ownership becomes more expensive, many drivers are reevaluating their options, whether it's opting for more efficient models or exploring alternative transportation methods. With these rising costs, it's more important than ever to stay informed and make smart financial decisions when it comes to your vehicle.
