Continuing our countdown of the top ten commercial OEM condenser coils that have faced issues over the past decade, we now take a closer look at the York® YLAA series. This unit has made a name for itself—not necessarily in a good way—due to recurring problems with its microchannel condenser coils. Contractors and end users alike frequently reach out to us about leaks and reliability concerns with the original microchannel coils on the YLAA. While York did offer an alternative with copper tube coils, these are rarely seen in the field. Most units come standard with microchannel technology, which has led to long-term dissatisfaction among customers. The most common models we encounter are the Style B units, which are equipped with microchannel condenser coils in both standard and high-efficiency versions. To identify whether you're dealing with a standard or high-efficiency model, check the model number. For example, "SE" stands for standard (like YLAA0700SE), while "HE" indicates high efficiency (such as YLAA0156HE). If you see "ZE" in the model number, like YLAA0080ZE, it means the unit originally came with copper tube coils. So what’s the fix? The answer is simple: change the channel. Converting the microchannel condenser coil to a copper tube coil significantly improves the reliability and serviceability of the YORK® YLAA chiller, while still maintaining OEM efficiency levels. However, there’s one important rule: when upgrading from microchannel to copper tubes, you must replace all coils in the circuit. If one coil is leaking and it's part of a system with four coils, you need to replace all four. Depending on the unit size, YLAA chillers can have between 4 and 12 coils. If you’re only looking to replace a single coil, we recommend contacting York directly for an MCHX replacement. At Nationwide Coils, we don’t perform partial replacements because it’s just a temporary fix and doesn’t resolve the underlying issues with the YLAA unit. While the YLAA is one of the more popular units we upgrade, we can perform microchannel conversions on any make or model. It’s a reliable solution that brings long-term value and peace of mind to your HVAC system. The Nationwide Coils Blog is written by industry experts with nearly two decades of experience in commercial HVAC. We provide valuable insights into products and services, and we encourage you to reach out anytime with questions or feedback.
