4-story roof fire in Glenview 5-22-11
Late Sunday evening, during a fierce storm, the Glenview 9-1-1 center received multiple calls reporting a fire at an apartment building located at 2700 Summit Drive. The initial response from the Glenview Fire Department included Engines 6 and 13, Battalion 6, Ambulance 6, Truck 14 (which was operating with Engine 8R), and Northfield Truck 29. Upon arrival, the alarm was escalated to a Code 4, bringing additional resources such as Glenview Engine 8, Ambulance 7, Northbrook Truck 12, and Morton Grove Squad 4. Interestingly, Northbrook Truck 12 had been en route to another Code 4 fire in their own jurisdiction when they were dispatched to this incident.
As companies arrived, they found smoke and fire erupting from the roof of the four-story, 'L'-shaped building. Northfield Truck 29 was the first aerial unit on the scene because Glenview Truck 14 was paired with Engine 8R, which offered more storage capacity for necessary equipment compared to the other reserve engines. Meanwhile, Northbrook Truck 12 positioned itself on the northwest side of the building to provide access to the roof, though their supply line was not activated.
Firefighters worked swiftly to contain the flames, deploying both Glenview and Northfield trucks' aerials to the roof. Thanks to the rapid intervention, the fire was confined to its point of origin before it could spread further. The extent of the roof damage was visible, but crews managed to extinguish the blaze efficiently. Larry Shapiro, who captured several photos of the incident, noted that Glenview Truck 14’s use of Engine 8R proved advantageous due to its ample compartment space.
Despite the quick knockdown, photographers Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro still visited the scene to document the aftermath. Although there wasn’t much left to photograph beyond the remnants of the fire, Larry shared a small collection of images online. One notable sight was Glenview Engine 6 arriving with their brand-new Pierce Arrow XT engine, marking a significant upgrade for the department.
