4-story roof fire in Glenview 5-22-11

As I stood outside the apartment complex at 2700 Summit Drive in Glenview, the rain pounded down around me, making it difficult to hear over the sound of thunder. It was well past 10 PM on a Sunday night when the 9-1-1 center received multiple calls reporting a fire. Responding companies found themselves facing not only the urgent situation of a blaze but also battling the elements as they tried to assess the extent of the damage. Glenview Engines 6 and 13 were among the first units on the scene, quickly followed by Battalion 6, Ambulance 6, and Glenview Truck 14, which was operating out of Engine 8R. As additional resources arrived, including Northfield Truck 29 and Morton Grove Squad 4, the initial alarm was upgraded to a Code 4. This brought reinforcements like Glenview Engine 8, Ambulance 7, Northbrook Truck 12, and even saw Northbrook Truck 12 returning from another fire in their own district. The fire, which had started on the roof of the four-story L-shaped building, was tackled swiftly. Both Glenview and Northfield trucks deployed their aerials to reach the roof, where the flames were quickly brought under control. Despite the storm, firefighters managed to contain the fire to its point of origin, preventing further spread. As Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene, the immediate danger had passed, leaving behind a damp and slightly surreal atmosphere. Larry’s photos captured the aftermath, showing the damage to the roof and the diligent efforts of the firefighters. Even though there wasn't much left to document visually, Larry shared a small gallery showcasing his work. One notable aspect was Glenview Truck 14's use of Engine 8R, which offered more storage space than its counterpart. This proved advantageous for accommodating the necessary equipment needed for such emergencies. Meanwhile, Glenview Engine 6 proudly showcased their newly acquired Pierce Arrow XT engine, a testament to the department's commitment to modernization and readiness. Reflecting on the night, it was clear how teamwork and resourcefulness made all the difference. Despite the challenging conditions, the firefighters demonstrated professionalism and efficiency. As I left the scene, the storm continued to rage, but the sense of relief among those involved was palpable.
