Attached garage fire in Wheeling 9-7-12

This morning, a passerby in Wheeling quickly dialed 9-1-1 after noticing thick smoke rising from a house near Strong Avenue and Wolf Roads. Emergency crews were quick to respond, and upon arrival, the first unit reported fire in the attached garage of a single-family home. They immediately escalated the alarm to a Code 4 working fire. By the time the first engine, Wheeling Engine 42, arrived on the scene, residents were already safely evacuated. Equipped with four lines, firefighters swiftly engaged the flames using two 2-1/2-inch lines to douse most of the fire in mere minutes. Additional lines were deployed as one team entered the house, while another was sent to the other side. The fire was contained before it could spread into the main house, although the living areas were significantly affected by smoke. Larry Shapiro, who arrived shortly after the initial response, captured several intense moments. His photos show firefighters aggressively attacking the blaze with multiple lines, smoke billowing out of the garage, and parts of a Corvette that was unfortunately caught in the inferno. One of the photos highlights a striking image of a 2-1/2-inch line directed at the attached garage on West Strong Street, with the caption noting the quick action of the firefighters. Another captures the intensity as smoke pushes out of the attic, with a firefighter carefully flaking out a hose line. Additional images show the extent of the damage, particularly in the garage where flames engulfed the Corvette. Parts of the car, manufactured with fiberglass, were clearly incinerated. Shapiro also documented the coordinated efforts of neighboring departments, including Northbrook Engine 10, Buffalo Grove Tower 25, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Ambulance 52, which all provided mutual aid. In one picture, Buffalo Grove Tower 25 can be seen heading to the roof to ventilate the area, while another shows two lines being deployed into the garage opening. Despite the firefighters' rapid response, the heat eventually caused the garage door to fail, allowing more smoke to pour out. Other images depict firefighters waiting for their lines to be switched to foam as parts of the vehicle continued to burn. Shapiro noted he even missed some of the heaviest fire and smoke, arriving just as the situation was coming under control. The Corvette, completely destroyed in the fire, serves as a stark reminder of the destructive power of such blazes. Shapiro's collection of photos provides a comprehensive look at the incident, capturing both the chaos and the professionalism of the firefighting teams involved. More images will be available on his site soon, offering further insight into this dramatic event. In total, the fire presented a challenging scenario, but thanks to the swift actions of the firefighters, the damage was largely confined to the garage, sparing the rest of the home from more severe destruction.

Blind Flange

Blind Flanges are manufactured without a bore and used to blank off the ends of piping, Valves and pressure vessel openings.

From the standpoint of internal pressure and bolt loading, blind flanges, particularly in the larger sizes, are the most highly stressed flange types.

However, most of these stresses are bending types near the center, and since there is no standard inside diameter, these flanges are suitable for higher pressure temperature applications.
