Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire, 2-15-16
Monday morning in Chicago's south side was nothing short of chaotic. It all started around 1:30 PM when a tragic accident occurred on the Dan Ryan Expressway at 85th Street. A worker was fatally pinned, making it an incredibly somber start to the day for emergency responders. Around the same time, Engine 49 responded to an automatic alarm at 43rd and Packers. They found a light haze inside an industrial building, which eventually escalated into a more serious fire involving stacks of cardboard that had caught alight. Fortunately, the sprinkler system managed to keep the flames under control, but firefighters were still on the scene for over three hours.
Things didn’t slow down as the day progressed. At 3:45 PM, Engine 101 arrived at a fully involved fire at 76th and Artesian. Just an hour later, another significant incident unfolded at 5141 South Princeton. The images accompanying this report were taken at that location. Due to Battalion Chiefs being tied up at the previous two incidents, Battalion 7 took charge as the still chief. This fire proved particularly challenging due to multiple frozen hydrants and its rapid spread to an adjacent occupied residence. The structure itself was originally a wooden house that had been converted into a church. While I couldn’t confirm details, I believe the spare engine on site was Engine 122, with Engine 5 serving as the other box engine.
As you can see from the photos captured by Eric Haak, the conditions were harsh, with firefighters battling not only the blaze but also the bitter cold. The images showcase everything from flames erupting from a house’s attic to firefighters maneuvering hoses through the snow-covered streets. One photo highlights Engine 60, standing ready amidst the chaos, while another captures the tense yet determined faces of Engine 16’s crew. There’s even a shot of a spare engine, Engine 122, parked strategically at the scene. The final image shows firefighters diligently conducting overhaul work after a fire damaged back porches, a testament to their tireless efforts even after the immediate danger has passed.
This series of events underscores the unpredictable nature of firefighting in urban environments. Despite the challenges posed by weather and limited resources, Chicago’s firefighters remain steadfast in their mission to protect lives and property. It’s a reminder of the bravery and dedication required to serve in such demanding roles, especially when multiple emergencies strike within a short span of time.
