Chicago 2-11 Alarm 9-16-11

Chicago firefighters responded to a major fire at 525 W. Armitage yesterday, just a block away from Engine 22's station. Upon arrival, they discovered a severe blaze on the second and third floors of a three-story building undergoing renovation. The incident was escalated to a 2-11 alarm, bringing in additional units to manage the situation. Tragically, during the firefighting efforts, the structure collapsed catastrophically, leaving only the front facade standing. The Chicago Tribune reported briefly on the event, highlighting the danger faced by first responders and the dramatic nature of the collapse. Tim Olk, a local photographer, arrived after the incident and captured several powerful images of the scene. His photos show firefighters working from elevated positions, using hand lines and master streams to control the fire, as well as the aftermath of the destruction. One image features Squad 1’s bucket being used for water application, while another shows firefighters operating from a neighboring rooftop. Engine 22 can be seen positioned in Sector 4 on Mohawk, with flames still burning through the debris. Another photo captures emergency personnel waiting in the street with a hand line, ready for further action. A final shot highlights the remaining front wall of the building, which stood despite the rest of the structure collapsing on the Mohawk side. A full gallery of Tim Olk’s photos is available for viewing [here], offering a rare and compelling look at the chaos and resilience displayed during this dangerous fire.
