Beach Park commercial fire 5-20-12

Police officers reportedly spotted a fire early this morning at the Happyland Pet Store, located at 11432 W. Wadsworth Road in Beach Park. The first arriving units encountered heavy smoke, and the alarm was quickly upgraded to a higher level. According to the *Chicago Sun-Times*, the Beach Park Fire Department was called to the building housing the Happyland Pet Center at 6:06 a.m. Initial reports suggested a person was trapped in one of the upper apartments, but all residents safely evacuated. The *Chicago Tribune* reported that the pet store was completely destroyed after a fire broke out in the basement, resulting in the loss of hamsters, gerbils, fish, and reptiles. Firefighters arrived around 6 a.m. and found heavy smoke. Beach Park Fire Department Chief Paul Tierney explained that firefighters entered the building and searched the upper floors when a flashover occurred. A water supply issue delayed firefighting efforts, prompting assistance from 15 surrounding communities, including Waukegan, Zion, and Newport. About 75 firefighters were on the scene. Tierney noted that the fire had been burning for some time before emergency crews arrived. He added that the fire originated in a concrete bunker-like basement with only one entrance, making it difficult to access. Jeff Rudolph, Tim Olk, and Larry Shapiro were on the scene, with Jeff arriving shortly after the second alarm was called and submitting several photos.
