Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire, 2-15-16
It’s another hectic morning here in the South Side, and things have been pretty intense since the early hours. Around 1:30 AM, there was a tragic accident on the Dan Ryan Expressway near 85th Street where someone lost their life in a pin-in collision. Just around that time, Engine 49 was dispatched to 43rd and Packers for what initially seemed like just a small alarm. Upon arrival, they found a light haze inside an industrial building, which eventually turned into a more serious still and box fire as flames began to engulf stacks of cardboard. Luckily, the sprinkler system managed to keep the fire under control, but crews were still on the scene for over three hours dealing with the aftermath.
Things didn’t slow down though. At 3:45 AM, Engine 101 responded to a full-blown fire at 76th and Artesian. An hour later, just before 5:00 AM, there was another still and box fire reported at 5141 S. Princeton, where some of these photos were taken. Due to the earlier incidents, Battalion Chiefs were already stretched thin, so Battalion 7 took charge of this particular fire. One challenge we faced was several frozen hydrants, making water supply a bit of a hassle. The fire unfortunately spread to the occupied home on the “D†side of the property. The structure itself was originally a wooden house that had been converted into a church. I’m not entirely sure, but I think Engine 122 was the spare engine on scene, while Engine 5 was the other box engine.
The weather conditions didn’t help either, with everything covered in snow, adding another layer of difficulty for firefighters trying to navigate the scene. It’s always tough when you see firefighters battling the elements while also managing the fire. These images really capture the grit and determination it takes to handle such situations, especially during the overnight hours when visibility is low and temperatures are freezing.
