This message is coming from Drew Gresik. He just sent over some updates and photos from the major fire that happened in Stone Park. Drew mentioned that there are likely going to be tons of posts about this incident, so he’s keeping his note brief. He shared a few of his over 500 photos taken at this particular job. The fire broke out in a grocery store with attached occupied apartments. Multiple master streams and handlines were used to combat the flames. Unfortunately, there were significant issues with malfunctioning hydrants, which forced command to call additional engines from various nearby departments. In other news, Chris Ranck forwarded a link to WGN’s helicopter footage of the fire. It gives a bird’s-eye view of the situation and really highlights how widespread the damage was.
Meanwhile, the Chicago Tribune published an article covering the event. According to reports, no injuries were reported following the five-alarm fire that erupted in the potato chip aisle of the Durango Supermercado around noon. The blaze, which caused part of the building’s roof to collapse, primarily affected the first-floor grocery store and the apartments above. Thick black smoke billowed from the structure, and firefighters worked diligently to douse the flames using both tower ladders and direct streams.
Jose Rivera, the manager on duty, recounted his experience trying to contain the initial outbreak. He grabbed a fire extinguisher and managed to suppress the flames temporarily before alerting the customers to evacuate. Despite his efforts, the fire intensified rapidly, leaving him no choice but to exit the premises. Fire officials decided to let the fire burn freely until conditions became safer for internal intervention.
Interestingly, Rivera’s mother, Imelda Rivera, who owns the store, was visibly distressed outside. Fortunately, all residents from the second-story apartments managed to escape unscathed. The exact cause of the fire remains unclear.
