Hey everyone,
Just got back from covering an intense fire over on the South Side of Chicago. It was a pretty wild scene that went down on March 21, 2017. I managed to snap some photos while things were heating up, so here’s a quick look at what went down that night.
First off, there were some serious flames shooting out of the attic. The heat was intense, and you could feel it even from a distance. This next shot shows Truck 41 rolling in to tackle the blaze. They wasted no time setting up their equipment and getting to work.
In this image, you can see firefighters scaling an aerial ladder. These guys were working nonstop to get the upper hand on the fire. It’s always inspiring to watch them in action—calm under pressure but moving with purpose.
Here’s another one where a firefighter is prepping his saw at the scene. Firefighting isn’t just about hoses and water; it often requires tools like these to cut through obstacles and stop the fire in its tracks.
And then there’s the communication van, which is essential for keeping everyone coordinated during a big operation like this. You’ll also notice Engine 123 and Engine 88 parked nearby, ready to provide support.
This next photo captures the eerie beauty of the smoke rising into the night sky. Even though fires are dangerous and destructive, they do have a strange kind of visual impact that’s hard to ignore.
As the firefighters worked tirelessly, they finally managed to bring the situation under control. In this last shot, you see a group of them posing together after the fire was extinguished. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love documenting their efforts—they’re not just doing a job; they’re protecting lives and communities.
These photos really capture the intensity and teamwork involved in fighting a fire like this. Huge thanks to all the first responders who put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe. If you want to see more of my work, check out my Instagram or follow me here for updates!
Take care,
Matt
