Koeppen appointed fire chief in Arlington Heights
**From the Village of Arlington Heights:**
---
It’s official! Ken Koeppen has been named the new Fire Chief for the Arlington Heights Fire Department. This appointment came directly from Village Manager Bill Dixon, effective immediately. Koeppen has been serving as the Acting Fire Chief since February 2014, following the retirement of former Chief Glenn Ericksen.
With an impressive career spanning 34 years, Koeppen brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He began his journey in 1980 as a firefighter/paramedic before being promoted to fire lieutenant in 1995, fire commander in 1998, and ultimately deputy fire chief in 2005. His extensive background in various leadership positions has prepared him exceptionally well for this new challenge.
Recently, Koeppen was awarded the Police Department's Lifesaver Award on March 20 during the L.W. Calderwood Officer of the Year banquet. The award recognized his incredible response during a hostage situation on December 12, 2013. Koeppen, who was visiting family nearby, noticed flashing lights and quickly sprang into action. Upon seeing Officer Michael McEvoy unconscious on the ground, he immediately provided critical assistance until help arrived.
Village Manager Bill Dixon praised Koeppen’s integrity and leadership abilities, noting his ability to foster strong relationships across all village departments. "Ken has consistently demonstrated the qualities needed to lead our fire department with distinction," Dixon stated.
Koeppen becomes the fifth fire chief since the department transitioned to a full-time professional model in 1958. Over the years, he has played a pivotal role in supervising staff, managing operational procedures, conducting arson investigations, and responding to countless emergencies—ranging from fires and medical crises to hazardous materials incidents. His dedication to the community is unwavering, and he expressed excitement about continuing to serve Arlington Heights at such a high standard. "This is my home now," Koeppen remarked. "As fire chief, I want to ensure we deliver nothing less than the highest quality service to everyone here."
The Arlington Heights Fire Department employs 110 individuals and offers comprehensive services including fire protection, emergency medical care, and specialized rescues. Divided into four key divisions—Administrative, Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical, and Training—the department remains committed to protecting both residents and businesses.
Ken Koeppen lives in Arlington Heights with his wife and son. His appointment marks an exciting chapter for the fire department, as they look forward to maintaining their reputation for excellence under his guidance.
