Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire, 12-10-14 (history)
Hey everyone,
This message is from Bill Friedrich. He had some thoughts about the closure of Engine 104's station. Before it shut down, these were among the last suppression companies operating 24/7 out of that location. Michigan Avenue wasn’t exactly bustling with activity during the weekends. Once the station closed, Engine 104 was moved to Engine 1's house, and 4-2-4 took over Engine 26's house. It was really tough for those of us who have been around here for a while. This place has so many great memories.

On a related note, take a look at these pictures. The first one is the CFD Command Bus 4-7-4 from 1955. You can see how things have changed over the years. That old bus sure brought back some nostalgia. The second picture shows the former Engine 104 from 1974, a Mack MB/Howe model with its 1250/500 capabilities. It’s amazing to think about all the calls that vehicle responded to. And finally, here’s a shot of CFD Engine 104’s original quarters at 1401 S. Michigan Avenue. Bill Friedrich managed to capture the essence of what made this station special.
These photos really bring back a lot of memories for me. I remember spending countless hours at this station. There was always something going on, whether it was training exercises or just hanging out with fellow firefighters. It’s sad to see places like this go, but they’ll always hold a special place in our hearts.
Take care,
