Excerpts from DNAinfo.com “It’s supposed to be one of the biggest golf events ever held,†said Ted Johnson, Herbie’s brother. “This is our third year, and it’s never been this big before.†The event kicks off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on June 29. After the rounds are completed, guests will enjoy a picnic-style reception featuring grilled steaks from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 115 Bourbon Street, located at 3359 W. 115th St. in south suburban Merrionette Park. Herbie Johnson passed away while battling a major house fire in Gage Park on November 2, 2012. In the wake of his tragic death, a golf outing was created to honor his memory. Since its beginning, the event has raised over $30,000, with funds supporting struggling firefighters in Chicago and a scholarship at St. Rita High School in Ashburn. This year, organizers have joined forces with the FDNY 9-11 Memorial Golf Outing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Herbie had played a key role in planning that event and formed lasting friendships along the way. So far, more than 100 players have registered for the classic. The cost to join is $125, which includes both the golf and the after-party. Some premium courses may require an additional fee. Those who just want to attend the reception can do so for $50. If you're looking for a chance to support a great cause while enjoying a day on the course, the Herbie Johnson Golf Classic is an event not to be missed.
