CFD Still & Box 7-8-11
On Friday, a fire broke out at a two-story home located at 948 N. Homan on Chicago's west side. Dan McInerney, who was in the city at the time, witnessed the incident and captured several photos along with a detailed account of the response.
As soon as the Main Fire Alarm dispatched Engine 12 to the scene, Engine 4-4-11 arrived and requested an emergency still and box for people trapped inside a 1.5-story house that was engulfed in heavy fire, with flames spreading to a neighboring structure in Sector 4. First due Engine 44 arrived quickly and deployed a line into the first floor, while Truck 36 performed primary and roof ventilation. However, the initial search turned up empty, as the house was actually vacant. Second due Engine 95 moved west on Augusta and brought their line to the rear of the building. Second due Tower Ladder 14 conducted a search of the exposure and also performed roof ventilation. Third due Engine 76 then entered the adjacent building with a line.
The fire department worked efficiently under challenging conditions, with temperatures reaching the upper 80s. Firefighters were seen resting and rehydrating after a long shift. Truck 36’s main line was being bedded down, and Engine 44 had one line deployed. The rear of Truck 36 showed its 40- and 50-foot bangor ladders, while Engine 76 was positioned at a hydrant, helping to manage water supply by using a gate valve on an unused port. Comm Van 2-7-1 was parked nearby, and Engine 95 had taken a hydrant on Augusta. Firefighters were also seen repacking hoses onto Engine 44. The event was captured by Dan McInerney, providing a rare behind-the-scenes look at the Chicago Fire Department’s operations during an active fire call.
