Lyons hazmat 9-3-11

The *Chicago Tribune* reported that a U.S. Postal Service employee at the Lyons Post Office made a startling discovery on Saturday morning. While sorting mail, Mark Thompson spotted what appeared to be half a stick of dynamite, a bullet, and some white powder hidden inside a broken envelope, buried among other packages and letters. According to Lyon’s Fire Department officials, the suspicious item was found around 8:11 a.m. at the west suburban post office located at 7836 W. Ogden Ave. As a precaution, hazardous materials teams were immediately called in. The post office was quickly evacuated while the Cook County Bomb Squad and multiple fire departments arrived on the scene to assess the situation. Tim Olk, a local photographer, was on-site and captured several images documenting the emergency response. His photos show hazmat technicians preparing for entry, conducting briefings, and carefully exiting the building in full protective gear. Additional photos also depict firefighters from Bedford Park standing by in basic protective equipment, as well as the Pleasantview rehab unit assisting with the operation. A nearby fire truck from Lyons Squad 1312 was seen supplying water to support the ongoing efforts. The incident raised significant concern, but no injuries were reported. Authorities remained on high alert until the package was safely removed and inspected. The public is advised to remain cautious and report any suspicious items they may encounter.
