Skokie responds to man trapped under a car
This past week, Jeff Rudolph sent in some images from an incident in Skokie, along with a detailed account of what happened. Here’s what he shared:
---
**Date:** August 30, 2011
**Time:** Around 3 PM
**Location:** 7700 block of Kilbourn Avenue
The call initially came in as a report of a child trapped under a vehicle. Skokie Fire Department quickly dispatched a full extrication team, which included two engines, a ladder truck, the rescue squad, an ambulance, and the battalion chief. By the time they arrived on scene, Engine 16 realized that the situation wasn’t quite what it seemed. It turns out that an adult male, who was somewhat intoxicated, had lifted one side of his car using a jack and slid underneath to fix his exhaust system. Somehow, he managed to get himself wedged in there while trying to work on it. His friend, who was also a bit tipsy, tried to help but ended up making things worse instead.
When Squad 18 finally showed up, they stabilized the car by chocking it and then used airbags to carefully lift the vehicle off him. With their assistance, the man was able to slide out without any serious injuries—just some minor scrapes. Surprisingly, he declined medical transport despite the efforts of the paramedics, and even though his exhaust still needed fixing, he seemed okay for the most part.
I’ve attached several photos taken by Jeff Rudolph below, capturing different moments of the rescue operation. You can see Tower Ladder 16 parked nearby, ready to assist if needed. Battalion Chief 16 is also visible in one of the shots.

Jeff has even more photos available [here]. It’s always fascinating to see how these situations unfold and how the firefighters manage to handle them safely.
