Skokie responds to man trapped under a car
This past week, Jeff Rudolph shared some images taken during a call in Skokie, along with a detailed account of what happened. Here's what he wrote:
---
**August 30, 2021 – Around 3 PM; 7700 block of Kilbourn Avenue**
I received a call about a potential emergency involving a child pinned under a vehicle. When the Skokie Fire Department responded, they sent out a full extrication team, which included two engines, a ladder truck, the rescue squad, an ambulance, and the battalion chief. It turned out that the situation wasn’t quite what we initially thought. Instead of a child, it was an adult male—let’s call him “Johnâ€â€”who was a bit tipsy at the time. John had raised one side of his car using a jack and slid underneath to work on his exhaust system. Unfortunately, things went south when he accidentally got himself wedged under the car. His buddy—who also happened to be a little intoxicated—tried to help but ended up making the situation worse.
When Squad 18 arrived, they quickly stabilized the vehicle by placing chocks under the tires and then used airbags to carefully lift the car enough for John to slide out. Despite the ordeal, John only suffered some minor abrasions. He declined medical transport, though his exhaust still needed fixing. The firefighters did an excellent job handling the situation, ensuring everyone’s safety while minimizing any further complications.
Attached are some photos I took of the incident. You can see Tower Ladder 16 and Battalion 16 arriving on scene, along with other units working together to resolve the situation. In one picture, you’ll notice how the car was lifted using airbags, allowing John to finally be freed. Another shot shows the moment after the rescue when John was safe and sound, no longer trapped beneath the vehicle.
