Meritor Wabco Vehicle Control Systems recall
The following recall affects fire apparatus manufactured by several leading brands, including American LaFrance, E-ONE, Ferrara, HME, Pierce, Spartan, and Sutphen. Fire Chief Magazine has compiled a list of the affected models:
- **Pierce** is recalling 724 trucks. The affected models include the 2007–2011 Arrow XT, 2008–2011 Custom Contender, 2008–2011 Impel, 2008–2011 Quantum, 2009–2011 Saber, and 2007–2011 Velocity.
- **E-ONE** is recalling certain 2008–2011 Cyclone II, Typhoon, and Quest vehicles produced between May 1, 2008, and November 28, 2011.
- **Ferrara** has issued a recall for 104 units of the 2009–2011 Inferno and Igniter models, which were manufactured between April 2009 and October 2011.
- **Sutphen** is recalling specific 2009–2012 model-year vehicles.
- **American LaFrance** is recalling certain 2010 and 2011 Eagle Fire trucks built between October 21, 2010, and August 25, 2011.
- **HME** is recalling select 2009–2012 fire trucks produced from January 16, 2009, to November 1, 2011.
In addition to these recalls, there's also a separate NHTSA campaign related to electronic stability control (ESC) modules. Meritor Wabco is recalling certain ESC modules with part numbers 446 065 020 0, 400 850 179 0, 400 850 195 0, 446 065 027 0, and 400 850 185 0. These modules were shipped to various North American vehicle manufacturers from August 2005 through September 2011.
Under specific driving conditions, the ESC system may miscalculate the slip angle, potentially causing the system to apply the outer front wheel brake unnecessarily. This could lead to the vehicle deviating from its intended path, increasing the risk of a crash if the driver doesn’t react quickly enough.
