Chicago Still & Box 2-4-11

Chicago firefighters responded to a fire at a mattress store located at 6019 N. Lincoln Avenue on Friday night. The blaze, which started inside the building, was relatively small and contained to the interior. Despite the presence of a bow string truss roof, the fire did not spread beyond the ceiling. This strip center had previously been the scene of a fire several years ago, and during their inspection for potential fire extension, firefighters discovered charring on the rafters from that earlier incident. Truck 56 was the first unit on the scene and made its way to the roof. The crew is set to receive a new 2010 Spartan/Crimson 103' aerial ladder in the near future, replacing their current Seagrave 100' unit. This could potentially be one of the last fires handled by the older rig before it's moved to the spare fleet. Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene just as the Still & Box was being called off. He captured a few images of the ongoing response and the aftermath. A small gallery of photos can be viewed [here](#).

Although not visible from the outside at night, this strip center has a bow string truss roof. The fire was contained to the interior before it was able to weaken the roof supports. Larry Shapiro photo

Most of the visible damage to the interior of the store and the merchandise is from heat and smoke. The fire was located in the rear of the building. Larry Shapiro photo

The building sustained a previous fire some years ago as indicated by the charring on the rafters that was discovered in the adjoining unit while firefighters were checking for extension. Larry Shapiro photo
