Lyons hazmat 9-3-11

The Chicago Tribune reported that a U.S. Postal worker at the Lyons post office made a startling discovery on Saturday morning. While sorting mail, Mark Thompson noticed what appeared to be a half-stick of dynamite, a bullet, and some white powder hidden inside a broken envelope, buried among other packages. The alarming find led to an immediate emergency response. According to Lyon's Fire Department officials, the suspicious package was discovered around 8:11 a.m. at the west suburban post office located at 7836 W. Ogden Ave. As a precaution, hazardous materials teams were called in, and the entire facility was evacuated. The Cook County Bomb Squad, along with multiple fire departments, arrived on the scene to handle the situation. Tim Olk, a local photographer, was on site and captured several images documenting the operation. The photos show hazmat technicians preparing for entry, conducting briefings, and working carefully to retrieve the item. One image shows two fully encapsulated firefighters exiting the building, while others depict support personnel and equipment being set up nearby. The incident sparked concern in the community, as the nature of the substances involved remained unclear. Local authorities emphasized that no injuries were reported, and the area was eventually cleared after the suspicious package was safely removed and examined. Read the full Tribune article HERE.
