Schaumburg Box Alarm 3-13-11

The Schaumburg Fire Department responded to a house fire around 4:30 AM on March 13, 2011. The incident began when a homeowner left something unattended on the stove, which sparked a fire that quickly spread throughout the home. One resident had to wake a neighbor to alert the department, as the flames were already growing fast. When first responders arrived at 808 Holyoke Court, heavy smoke was pouring from the front door of the split-level residence. The smoke remained low in the cul-de-sac, surrounding the engine positioned in front of the house.

The fire rapidly escalated, involving the entire first floor. The shift commander quickly upgraded the alarm to a MABAS Box Alarm, and crews worked aggressively to contain the blaze. The rear of the house was fully engulfed, with flames extending to the second floor and into the attic. Due to the intense heat and rapid fire spread, access for firefighters was extremely challenging.

Access to the structure was further complicated by a burned-out stairway, forcing crews to use nearly a dozen ground ladders around the house. Initially, firefighters worked from the ladders to pull ceilings and gain access to the attic fire. Later, they were able to enter the second floor and work from inside the home. Multiple hand lines were deployed from all sides of the structure to control the fire.

Ground ladders were placed at all second-floor windows and opposite corners of the roof to provide access and egress. Despite the difficult conditions, both residents escaped safely, though a dog did not survive the fire. At the time, temperatures were in the mid-20s, causing water on the ground to freeze, which added to the challenge of firefighting efforts.

Mutual aid units included trucks from Hoffman Estates and Elk Grove Village, engines from Streamwood and Hanover Park, ambulances from Elk Grove Township, Palatine Rural, and Prospect Heights, and chief officers from Itasca and Hoffman Estates. The coordinated response helped bring the fire under control within a few hours, but the house suffered extensive damage. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of unattended cooking and the importance of quick emergency response.
