Schaumburg Box Alarm 3-13-11
The Schaumburg Fire Department responded to a house fire around 4:30 AM on March 13, 2011. According to reports, the fire started when something was left unattended on the stove, leading to a rapid spread of flames. A resident had to wake up a neighbor to call for help as they tried to escape the burning home. Upon arrival, first responders encountered heavy smoke pouring from the front door of the split-level residence at 808 Holyoke Court. The smoke remained low in the cul-de-sac, surrounding the engine that had arrived first.
As the fire engulfed the entire first floor, the incident commander quickly escalated the alarm to a MABAS Box Alarm. Fire also reached the second floor and the attic, making the situation increasingly dangerous. Due to the limited access and the challenging layout of the neighborhood, firefighters had to rely heavily on ground ladders to reach the upper levels of the structure. Multiple hand lines were deployed from all sides of the house, and crews worked from the ladders to pull ceilings and attack the fire in the attic.
A video and several photographs captured the scene, showing the intensity of the fire and the efforts of the responding units. Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, arrived about 30 minutes into the response and documented the event with multiple images. His photos highlight the deployment of Schaumburg Engine 53 and Truck 52, as well as the use of ladders for access and egress. One image shows a RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) standing by while firefighters worked inside the structure.
Despite the severity of the fire, both residents escaped safely, though a pet did not survive. The temperature was in the mid-20s, causing water on the ground to freeze, which added another challenge for the firefighters. Mutual aid units from Hoffman Estates, Elk Grove Village, Streamwood, Hanover Park, and several ambulance services joined the effort. Chief officers from Itasca and Hoffman Estates also arrived to assist with command and coordination.
The fire caused extensive damage throughout the home, and the aftermath showed the full extent of the destruction. A complete photo gallery is available online for those interested in viewing more details of the incident.
